Procedure:

Ask participants the following questions:
What do they write in English? (Answers will vary)
When they write what do they start with? (with an introduction, a topic sentence)
Say the following: Writers generally start their writing with a good topic sentence and other ideas support it. This session is focused on identifying topic sentences.
Activity 1
Objectives:
Participants will be aware what the topic sentence is
Time: 15 min
Materials: none
Write on the board “Topic Sentence”. Ask participants to tell what it is. Accept all answers and write ideas on the board. Don’t comment.
Put participants into groups of three-four and ask them to work out what the definition of a topic sentence.
Definition:
A topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph. All the other sentences serve to explain, describe, extend, or support this main-idea sentence.
Ask speakers from each group present their ideas to other groups. Invite other groups ask clarifying questions and/ or comment. Read the definition and ask whether the definition from the book is close to their own.
Summarise this activity by telling that almost most of the paragraphs they read start with the topic sentence. However, some of the topic sentences come in the middle of the paragraph; others come at the end. Some paragraphs have no stated topic sentence at all; in those cases, the main idea is implied. Students are usually are advised to use topic sentences in all their work in order to be certain that the writing has a focus and develops a single idea at a time. If you say, “There are three good ways to get a date” in your topic sentence, but you don’t describe these three ways, the reader will be disappointed. Good topic sentences help both writers and readers to think clearly about the main points.
