An Address Without a Letter
Before 1840 there were no stamps. In those days people usually (1) much money for a letter when they received it. That is why (2) who were poor did not write letters often. When they sent or (3) a letter, it was a very important thing for them. Many people (4) if someone received a letter.
There is a story from that time about a (5) to a poor woman. One day the postman came to her house to (6) her a letter. He told the woman to pay a lot of (7), which she did not have.
The woman looked at the letter, and (8) it back to the postman. "I cannot pay for it," she (9). Just at that moment a man heard the conversation between the (10) and the woman. He came up to the woman and said, "I (11) to help you. Let me pay for your letter. I (12) money," The man gave the postman the money he wanted to (13) from the woman.
"I thank you very much," said the woman, "but you must not (14) for the letter. It is from my brother. He (15) me one letter every three months. He does not (16) about himself and his family. He writes only my (17) on the letter. Then I know that he is (18). And as I cannot pay for the letter, I give it (19) to the postman."

The close test can also be used for the purposes of current (follow-up) control, when it is important to identify in a timely manner how students mastered the lexical material passed over a certain period of time. Since it is practically very difficult to find such a text in which the words intended for gaps would be combined under one topic, it is proposed to proceed from the principle of selective exclusion of material subject to verification, which is considered basic in controlling the possession of official words (articles , prepositions, etc.). In other words, the controlled word or phrase is omitted in the place of the sentence, where it is in accordance with the grammatical rules of the expression. The introduction of this principle into the practice of creating a close test will greatly expand the teacher's capabilities in organizing current control, because based on this principle, he can prepare several close tests during the study of a certain conversational topic and thus check the assimilation of all lexical material within its limits more economically by way. The assimilation of vocabulary, as established, is one of the parameters of learning a foreign language, which is simultaneously associated with other parameters and even determines them. This point of view is confirmed by the data of the frequency dictionary of E.A. Steinfeldt, according to which nouns make up 40.7% of all the most commonly used significant words, which at the same time act as semantic milestones and therefore contribute to the understanding of the text as a whole. An example of such a close-test, developed on the basis of a text from an English textbook for grade VI by A.P. Starkov et al. (Moscow, 1984, pp. 40-41) may be the following:
