2 course reading and writing lesson 8

Brainstorming: Asks sts if crime is more of a problem of the city or countryside. Are their criminal gangs in the capital city of their country (countries)? Sts in groups compile a list of crimes such gangs are usually involved in (petty or serious), and how such crimes are usually punished.
Vocabulary. Suggested list of 6 items to pre-teach:
Scaffold (from a picture, ideally of a building site. It supports something)
Gallows (extend from the above, it supports the rope. Another picture?)
Snare/snared (picture of a rabbit snare?)
Condemn/Condemned (pass sentence, especially death sentence. Also a building, to be destroyed)
Countenance (another word for ‘face’)
Swoon (another word for ‘faint’)
Handout materials 1 (ideally, copy pages 1 & 2 back to back, and staple page 3. Folds the whole in half, so the passage is hidden).
Directs sts to read the introduction, and sees if the law in England is similar to that of their country/-ies. Brief feedback on this.
Asks students to read the passage and jot down 3 adjectives to describe how Fagin feels. Sets time limit of 6 minutes.
Groups of 3 compare adjectives
Suggested adjectives: frightened, fearful, terrified, confused, desperate, lonely, deluded, unrepentant,
Students consider exercise 2 alone.
Pairs compare answers.
Feedback (1; False, Fagin doesn’t notice Oliver until line 34. 2; he thinks Oliver crying will make his getaway more believable. 3; because of the audience, come to see the hanging. 4; ‘jailer’, line 13. 5; ‘spend’, possibly ‘waste’.)
1. The presentation of the new lesson:
a) Introduces the theme : Relations.
Exercise 1. Read the passage, then note 3 adjectives to describe how you think Fagin feels at this time.
Exercise 2

  1. Fagin notices Oliver in lines 19-20, and remarks at how good he looks. True or false?

  2. Why does Fagin approve of Oliver’s tears in line 55?

  3. Why does Dickens refer to the gallows as ‘the black stage’ in line 72?

  4. The word ‘turnkey’ appears twice in the third paragraph (lines 8 – 14). Breaking the word into its two parts, and thinking of where this scene is, what other word in the paragraph has the same meaning?

  5. Look at ‘beguile’ in line 70. Are the crowds there to smoke and play cards, or for a later ‘attraction’? What word do you think you could put in place of ‘beguile’?
