CHAPTER II THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INTEGRATED SKILLS IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
2.1. The differences between receptive and productive skills
The four types of communication skills taught in an English class are speaking, writing, reading, and listening. These four distinct language skills are also commonly referred to as productive and receptive skills. Speaking and writing are known as productive skills because they both require some form of speech production, while reading and listening are known as receptive skills. Alternatively, you can also find the productive skills called active skills and the receptive skills called passive skills. When we talk  about communication, there are  two important parts, namely productive and receptive language. These two elements are at the heart of communication and are often covered in any language course. As a content creator and writer, I needed to further develop these skills. I learned the skills not only in school but also through experience. Hence, this chapter would discuss the difference between productive and receptive skills. The relationship between productive and receptive skills is that although they are both part of communication, their difference is that productive skills focus on the skills needed to give information while receptive skills focus on the receipt of targeted information. That's the relationship between the two and the point of this article. However, I also know that it needs more explanation. In this article, I have prepared a more in-depth understanding, explanation, and info graphic for you to figure things out visually. We will briefly discuss each of the skills so that you understand their differences. The difference between productive and receptive skills is that productive skills focus on giving or producing information while receptive skills focus on acquiring or receiving information. Also, most people have higher receptive skills than productive skills.

When we talk about the differences between productive and receptive skills, we are talking about how they are used. Basically, productive skills are used to give or produce information. 6Receptive skills are used to accept or receive information. Productive comes from the root of the word produce. The reason for this is that it is more about the production side of communication. Receptive comes from the root of the word to receive. The reason for this is that it is more on the receiving end of the communication. I have explained each of these skills in more detail in a separate article. When we talk about manufacturing skills, writing and speaking is the focus. When it comes to receptive skills, the focus is on reading and listening. As you can see, their core is related to their difference. When we give information, we write or speak. When we receive information, we read or listen. In my course paper explaining both in more detail, I explained why there are only 2 cores for each of them. And the main reason is that there are actually only 2 ways of giving information and 2 ways of receiving information, namely writing and speaking, reading and listening respectively. The reason is that the language, for example, this course paper consists of words and letters. How I created this set of words and letters for people to understand is my production capacity. How you understand this set of letters and words is your receptivity. Some people say that drawing is also a productive skill. Well it's true. However, it is the same whether you actually read or understand the image shown to you. Our brain actually sees the letters as a kind of drawing. The simple reason is that our letters, the alphabet, or the writing itself have only recently been developed. Our brains are actually not good at reading.
That's why it's hard to study just by reading a chapter of your book. Most will find it better to listen to their teacher than to read. It's not the fault of the student or the book. It's that we are more inclined to learn by listening than by reading. I hope you understand what I mean, drawing is also a part of writing. They are technically the same when it comes to the cores of the production and accommodation capacities. Another big difference is their level of mastery over each other. Finally, we will talk about their mutual domination. The most important thing to note here is that our productive abilities are generally lower than our receptive abilities. The main reason for this is that we can use contexts to receive information or receptive abilities. When we talk about connection and relationships, we are not just talking about their differences, we are also talking about their similarities, which we will discuss in this section. The connection between productive and receptive skills is that they are similar when it comes to being part of the communication process. Both are very important because they are about understanding. However, productive skills are focused on giving information while receptive skills are more focused on receiving information. Previously I have already discussed the difference between the two. This section is about their similarity, which is that both are part of the communication process. When we talk about communication, there are usually 2 parties giving and receiving information. As you can see, giving is productive, receiving is receptive. Without the other there can be no communication between us. As you can see, although they are different, both are actually in harmony with each other and complement each other so that we can communicate well with each other. It is just like my example that I am writing this article and you are reading it. You hear someone talking and you hear what they are talking about. So when we talk about their relationship with each other, we are talking about harmony between them. The relationship between receptive and productive skills is that they are in harmony with each other when it comes to communication.
