The perfect crime
It was 10.00 p.m. and Princes Street was dark and quiet. The gang waited in the back of the car. Each man was given a gun and a mask.
Suddenly, the lights in the Princes Street
jewellery shop went out. The men got out of the
car and calmly walked to the shop door. Using a door key they had copied the week before, they broke into the building and put on their masks. The shop had recently had a new alarm installed, but the robbers had discovered the security code, and quickly disabled the system. The night-watchman was asleep – they grabbed him and
tied him up.
The gang worked quickly and silently. Money
was stolen from cash registers and jewellery from display cabinets. At 10.16 p.m. they were putting jewellery and money into the last bags when suddenly the doorbell rang. Everyone stopped working. A policeman was ringing the doorbell. He’d come to see his friend, the night-watchman. As nobody answered, the policeman walked
away. At 10.19 p.m. the gang was ready. They put the bags into the car and drove away.
The next day the case was in all the national newspapers – the gang had got away with ‘the crime of the century’. In less than 20 minutes they had stolen £500,000 in cash and £1,500,000 worth of jewellery. A reward of £100,000 was offered, but the criminals were never caught. They had committed ‘the perfect crime’.
