POWER (of actors)
• dispositional power [in terms of ‘having resources’ (money, knowledge, personnel, weapons, reputation, etc.)] – UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: With the world's largest economy, hundreds of overseas military bases, and leadership positions in various international institutions, the United States is an undeniable global power.
• episodic power [in terms of achieving outcomes in social relations (e.g. influence on a certain decision)] - SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND ACTIVISTS: The abolition of slavery was one of the most powerful reform movements. Quakers and many churches in New England saw slavery as an evil that must be abolished from society. They targeted slave owners who profited off of enslaved people's labor. Harriot Tubman, who helped people escape, and Frederick Douglass, a self-educated and forceful orator and writer, proved be powerful speakers. Abolitionists came to the defense of African Americans accused of running from their masters when law officials threatened to return them. Abolitionism was anathema to Southerners and not popular in many areas of the North, but they moved slavery to a central focus in American political life.
• capabilities/power in organizational terms (organizations, resources, rules, bargaining) - TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS : A TNC can also apply to its affiliates a more significant system of participation than that of subsidiaries in order to secure direct centralized control over all its activities. In this case, branches of TNCs are created in the host country or subsidiaries existing there are transformed into branches. This was the case, in particular, with the subsidiaries of US TNCs after the Second World War. The distinguishing features of the branch is the ownership of all its shares (shares) of the parent company, which means that it does not have the right of a legal entity and economic independence.
• capabilities/power in discursive terms (knowledge, story lines, discourses, deliberation) - NETWORK COMMUNITIES: The World Wide Web. This is a directed network in which nodes represent Web pages and edges are the hyperlinks between pages. More precisely, there exists an edge from page p to page q if page p contains at least one hyperlink pointing to page q. Usually, the actual number of hyperlinks from p page q is not important and hence the network modelling the Web is unweighted. Studying the Web as a network is of crucial importance in the field of Web information retrieval. Web search engines, for instance, heavily exploit the Web topology in order to rank Web pages that are returned to the user that issued a query. The PageRank method, which is a major ingredient of Google search engine, is a fitting example. The World Wide Web. • transitive power [conflict-oriented zero-sum games (‘A achieves something at the cost of B’)] - INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST AND EXTREMIST GROUPS: The blast happened on 18.11.2022 at about 16:20 local time (13:20 GMT) on Sunday in a shopping street in the Taksim Square area. Turkey has blamed Kurdish rebels. A suspect - a Syrian woman - has been arrested, the interior minister said.
• intransitive power [social integration and collective outcomes (‘A and B achieving something together’)] – UNO: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals with 169 targets that all 191 UN Member States have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2030.
• situate power at the level of the acting agent (‘the swimming fish’)
• situate capabilities/power at the level of structures (‘the water putting pressure on the fish’)- Saudi Arabia : You can’t envy the Saudis at all now - ISIS is atrocious on the northern borders, pro-Iranian Houthis have appeared in the South, the Eastern Province is seething in the east of the kingdom, the unstable situation with Bahrain. So for the Saudis, this is the moment of truth. If they lose control of the South, then the situation could develop unpredictably. Especially considering the fact that the political situation inside Saudi Arabia itself is unstable and is not going to stabilize in the near future.
