Part Three: Assessing your students before, during, and after a lesson
Homework Task Eleven

Based on what you have learned in this section, develop or choose an available diagnostic assessment tool that will measure the concepts you want to teach in the lesson plan that you chose in Homework Task. Thus, explain the brief diagnostic assessment you will use to measure the constructs BEFORE the class. Finally, explain how you will use the information to make informed decisions about your lesson plan (2 pages total).
Let’s start with ‘What is Diagnostic assessment?’. It is an act of gathering information which helps teachers’ to identify learners’ strengths and weaknesses with regards to course content. Before starting my lessons, I usually use diagnostic assessment to know the level of the students, their weak and strong points. In most cases I face up the problem of different knowledge level as, all students have different background and skills.
Diagnostic assessments are often used before teaching commences. It is good for the teacher to use diagnostic assessment before the classes because, the teacher will be able to think about teaching techniques and approach to teach students as they should take into consideration the knowledge level and it’s background.
The problem that I and most teachers have to deal is as I mentioned above, the different knowledge level of the students in the same group or class. As a teacher you should get a good result in teaching process (students should know the subject well). But, it is very difficult to get a good result from the students, whose knowledge level and abilities differ from each other. There are some reasons:

  • The students, whose language level is low will have some difficulties in understanding the topic, so teacher will have to explain the theme for several times, and provide the students with detailed information and more examples.

  • Those students whose knowledge is good, they have got good language skills and can express their opinion in target language (English) well, can be bored if the teacher explains the theme over and over again.

Therefore, I think that diagnostic assessment can help teacher to solve these problems. Moreover, using diagnostic assessments can support me as being a teacher decisions about the content that will be taught as well as the approach of assessing that content. And the teacher will have a chance to prepare beforehand.
I think that for the beginning it is better to test speaking skill of the students as, this skill is very productive and teacher can get maximum information about students’ knowledge. As by listening, their speech we can analyze all their strong and weak points. For example, before starting the lesson, I ask students general questions about the subject and ask them to give their opinion and ideas. When they answer the questions, I can test not only their knowledge on the theme, but also their grammar, vocabulary and fluency. This information can be used during my classes, so I will have opportunity to organize the lesson with the maximum benefit for the students.
