  • It is the world’s longest “motorable corridor” according to Guinness World Records
  • It consists of both official and unofficial elements
  • It is a distance of around 48000 km
  • The fastest Pan-American highway cycle is 84 days 11 hours
  • It is also known as the Inter-American Highway

Background

The idea for a Pan-American highway system originated at the Fifth International Conference of American States in Santiago de Chile in 1923. In 1925, the First Pan-American Highway Conference held in Buenos Aires found that the construction of a highway was of immediate importance for the development of the region.

Background

In 1966, the new U.S. Interstate Highway System brought official status to most previously unofficial routes⁴. Today, the whole system extends from Alaska and Canada to Chile, Brazil, and the southern tip of Argentina, totaling nearly 30,000 miles (48,000 km) .

Introduction

It is a network of highways that connects North America and South America.

The whole system, from Canada and Alaska to Chile and Argentina, totally nearly 30 000 miles(48000 km).

Countries served

The Northern Pan-American Highway travels through nine countries, including in Central America:

  • Canada (CANAMEX Corridor unofficial)
  • United States (Interstate Highway System official)
  • Mexico
  • Guatemala
  • El Salvador
  • Honduras
  • Nicaragua
  • Costa Rica
  • Panama

Countries served

The Southern Pan-American Highway travels through five countries:

  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • Peru
  • Chile
  • Argentina
  • Important spurs also connect with four other South American countries:

  • Bolivia
  • Brazil
  • Paraguay
  • Uruguay

Benefits

  • It has created better economic opportunities
  • The corridor reduced crime and corruption in participating countries
  • Also it has reduced emigration from those countries to the United States
  • The highway has been an important deterrent to Communist expansion in Latin America

Challenges

  • Poor road conditions: The highway passes through many different countries with varying levels of infrastructure which is poor
  • Lack of security: Some parts of the highway pass through areas with high crime rates, which can make travel dangerous
  • Environmental challenges: The highway passes through many different types of terrain, including mountains, deserts, and rainforests. This can make travel difficult and dangerous in some areas.

Future prospects

It has been an important transportation route for people and goods and it remains a crucial part of link tjroughout America
