PREPOSITIONS OF TIME
At is used before certain points of time.
At 2 o’clock, at sunset, at dawn, at 19:20, at the moment, present, midday, midnight, noon, dusk etc
e.g. We start our lesson at 5 o’clock.
They will go for home at night.
At is also used before short holidays and meal times.
At Navruz, at Easter, at Thanksgiving, At Christmas, at the weekend etc.
At breakfast, at branch, at lunch, at supper etc.
e.g. People cook sumalak at Navruz.
Let’s not keep silence at supper.
At is also used before the word night when it means each night, when it is night. But when it means a particular day’s night, we use in + the night.
e.g. Nowadays, it is very dangerous to walk at night.
The stars usually shine like diamonds at night.
I was not able to sleep well in the yesterday’s night because of mosquito attack.

In is used with longer periods of time such as week, month, year, decade, century, age etc.
e.g. Tim was born in May.
She graduated the university in 2010.

In is used also used with morning, evening, afternoon etc.
e.g. I had an extra lesson in the morning.
They will have an official meeting in the evening.
In = during
e.g. You are not allowed to use your phones in the exam.
Don’t sleep in the lesson.
In = after
e.g. We will graduate in five years.
He will come back in four years.
In = within
e.g. I will finish writing the book in 5 days.
