Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Opinions are divided as to the most effective way of improving driving standards. While some
people believe safety course to be the best way out, others state that severe penalties will
produce expected results. Both these views will be discussed in this essay followed by my
personal opinion.
Advocates of safety courses consider that teaching drivers on a regular basis will increase the
awareness of driving standards. Such courses will update their knowledge on road rules and
enable them share their driving experience with other course participants. For example, in my
home country, Uzbekistan, drivers are obliged to take short courses every five years for the
purpose of safety maintenance on roads.
Other people, however, promote punishment as the way forward. They argue that merely
teaching is not sufficient, and strictly penalizing lawbreakers will pay off in the long run. Such
a system will not only punish drivers who do not comply with rules, but also serve as a
deterrent for other would-be offenders.
In my opinion, neither way is perfect and, instead, the process before getting a license, not after
it, should be complicated. Driving tests should consist of several stages which thoroughly
examine a future driver. The best example I could give is the UK which has one of the hardest
driving tests with over a half of test takers failing it at first attempt.
In conclusion, road safety is one of the most important issues for almost all countries, thus
candidates for a driving license should be subjected to close scrutiny to prevent any future
disaster on roads.
