1. Say everything you can about Red. Compare the descriptions of him as a young man and as a middle-aged skipper. The two descriptions are certainly presented in a striking contrast. What is the author’s purpose in portraying the character in this unusual manner? Does he just mean to show how a man may change in twenty-five years or is his purpose much subtler than that?
2. What do you think about Sally? What is your opinion about her love for Red? Was it really the great passion Neilson thought it to be or was it just another on Neilson’s illusions? Can you count for this feature?
Do Neilson’s words “Waste, what waste!” refer only to himself or can they to a certain extent be applied to Sally?

3. Say everything you can about Neilson. Comment on the author’s words: “He had said himself that he was a sentimentalist, and when sentimentality is joined with scepticism there is often the devil to pay.”

How did the meeting with Red affect Neilson’s life (his memories, illusions, attitude to Sally, plans for the future)?
