RGIPT_Jais_CEBE_IPC_Lab_2023 1 Experiment No. 8 Guidelines for sampling and analysis of sulphur dioxide in ambient air (Improved West and Gaeke method) 1. Objective: The purpose of this protocol is to provide guidelines for monitoring and analysis of sulphur dioxide in ambient air. 2. Standard The national ambient air quality standards for sulphur dioxide is presented in the table 3. Sulphur dioxide is generally considered to be a major pollutant in urban and industrial environment. Sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) is a colorless, nonflammable gas that has a strong suffocating odor. Sulfur dioxide can be detected by taste and odor in ambient air at concentrations as low as 0.3 ppm. Higher levels of SO 2 can result in temporary breathing impairment for asthmatic children and adults who are active outdoors. The SO2, or any other calibration span gas, should be vented to the atmosphere rather than into the shelter or other sampling areas. If this is impossible, limit operator exposure to SO 2 by getting fresh air every 5 to 10 minutes. The operator must leave the area immediately if he/she experiences light headedness, headache or dizziness. Health and Safety Warnings, Cautions 4. Numerous methods have been developed and recommended to determine atmospheric level of this pollutant, but all of these methods show a limited reliability (principally due to interferences). Despite development of more or less instrumental techniques, so called "wet” methods are still in use and new absorbents have been found to improve the fixation of sulphur dioxide. Because of its simplicity, sensitivity, specificity and marginal equipment cost, West-Gaeke method remains in use. One of the disadvantages of the mentioned method is that absorbent contains toxic tetrachloromercurate (II). It has also been found that this method gives perfect results in laboratory conditions while urban air samples are susceptible to interferences like nitrogen dioxide present in the air, but this can be solved by adding sulfamic acid subsequent to collection. Pollutant Time Weighted Average Concentration in Ambient Air Industrial, Residential, Rural and other Areas Ecologically Sensitive Area (Notified by Central Government) Sulphur Dioxide (SO 2 ), µg/m 3 Annual * 24 Hours ** 50 80 20 80 *Annual Arithmetic mean of minimum 104 measurements in a year, at a particular site, taken twice a week 24 hourly at uniform intervals. ** 24 hourly or 8 hourly or 1 hourly monitored values, as applicable, shall be complied with 98% of the time in a year. 2% of the time, they may exceed the limits but not on two consecutive days of monitoring.
