2 This is the reference method for the determination of sulphur dioxide. It should be used for critical studies of air quality, and when suitably modified, it can be used for determining base-line values for “unpolluted” atmospheres. It is a preferred method for continuous air monitoring, provided the instrumentation employed is of sound design and construction. This method can be used for spot checks, monitoring, field surveys, methods and instruments calibration and such other applications as require a sensitive, accurate and reliable method for the determination of sulphur dioxide. 5. Principle of the method Modified West & Gaeke Method (IS 5182 Part 2 Method of Measurement of Air Pollution: Sulphur dioxide). Sulphur dioxide from air is absorbed in a solution of potassium tetrachloro-mercurate (TCM). A dichloro-sulphito-mercurate complex, which resists oxidation by the oxygen in the air, is formed. Once formed, this complex is stable to strong oxidants such as ozone and oxides of nitrogen and therefore, the absorber solution may be stored for some time prior to analysis. The complex is made to react with pararosaniline and formaldehyde to form the intensely coloured pararosaniline methyl-sulphonic acid. The absorbance of the solution is measured by means of a suitable spectrophotometer.
