Introduction
Aquaponics is a sustainable production system for both freshwater fish and a variety of
plants. This system combines aquaculture and hydroponics into a symbiotic operation that produces over twelve times more plant material per square foot than traditional agriculture.
Aquaponics was rediscovered in the 1970s, and has grown into the frontrunner for sustainable food production now and into the future. While hydroponics and aquaculture are well-established production methods with large amounts of research, aquaponics is a fairly new field of study.
