Pros & Cons
Maintaining an aquaponic system can be time-consuming, but it's simple once you understand the science behind a balanced ecosystem. It’s best-suited for vegetable and herb production in a setting where the temperature can be easily controlled. Harvesting fish is a byproduct of a healthy system, and falls far short of the amount of plant material that will be harvested.

Aquaponics combines the benefits of both hydroponics and aquaculture, which also compounds the unique needs of each system. For example, pH is a key factor in both aquaculture and hydroponics, and both systems need to stay within a certain range for healthy development. However, plants need a slightly acidic pH of 6-6.8, while Esh prefer a slightly alkaline range of 7-8.
3oth are easy to maintain separately, but when you combine fish and vegetable production into one system, the target pH range becomes smaller. Most systems should aim for a pH near neutral for healthy fish, plants, and the bacteria that makes their beneficial relationship possible. Temperature, light, water quality, nutrient levels, and other factors have similar maintenance requirements.
Furthermore, some benefits of an aquaponic system may be cons for hobby growers. For example, year-round harvest means year-round maintenance. Luckily, the daily maintenance on an aquaponic system is simple; feed the fish and check the water temperature.
However, a successful aquaponic system can produce a large amount of fresh, organic produce. In fact, most systems are so productive that growers end up selling produce to neighbors, setting up community- supported agriculture organizations, or selling at local farmer’s Markets. A medium to large-scale hobby operation can serve as a decent source of side income.
The purpose of this book is to focus on hobby-sized aquaponic systems. These can range from educational 10-gallon fish tank systems to a full backyard of IBC totes. If you are interested in starting a commercial aquaponic operation, it is best to start small and learn the science behind maintaining a system before investing in expensive equipment. This will allow you to discover what is profitable in your
area, if the fish and plants you choose are viable for the climate, and if you enjoy the process.
The first decision you will need to make as a hobby grower is where you will put your system. This will determine the temperature and lighting conditions, which will determine what plants you can grow and what fish will do well in your system. Once you have a location, you can begin the planning process.
