Salahiddin al-Ayyubi started his military career under his uncle Asad ad-Din Shirkukh with the rank of junior officer. He marched to Egypt with his uncle in 1171. Shirkukh ended the rule of the Fatimid dynasty in Egypt. After that, the Ayyubid sultan was forced to return to Cairo. Salah al-Din vowed to recapture Jerusalem. That’s why he prepares in every way for the next campaign. He attacked the Emirate of Mosul in 1182 and subdued them. Later, Saladin captured the fortress of Aleppo (now Aleppo), which was allied with the Crusaders. After the Sultan destroyed all the allies of the crusaders one by one, he waited for an opportunity to attack the Christians.
In April 1185, King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem died of leprosy. The king’s six-year-old son, Baldwin V, ascended the throne. However, taking advantage of the king’s youth, Guy de Lusignan and Renaud de Châtilon seized power. Lusignan was elected king of Jerusalem. After that, the new king raided the Hajj caravan to start a war against Saladin and put all the Muslims in the caravan to the sword. - King Guy de Lusignan and Renaud de Chatillon gathered an army to march on Saladin. In the summer of 1185, the crusader army set out from Jerusalem. Saladin waited for the crusaders near the Palestinian village of Hattin. The heat of the weather, the distance of the road and the lack of water brought great losses to the Christian army. The sultan buried all the wells on the road in order to keep the crusaders without water. Because of this, many knights died on the road due to lack of water. The crusaders, exhausted, arrived near Hettin.
