Man and Superman (written 1903): This marks another shining moment in Shaw's professional journey. Penned in 1903, the work centers around his favorite topic of Don Juan. Although quite lengthy, the fourth act is frequently abbreviated or omitted. The plot revolves around a lady's endeavors to convince a socialist reformer and lifelong bachelor to take her as his bride.
Act III constitutes a dream-like interlude that could stand alone as a one-act play. It features a dialogue between Don Juan and the devil.
Major Barbara (written 1905): The subject is a female member of the Salvation Army who encountered an ethical predicament when her church received contributions from individuals, such as her father, who were involved in the sale of arms and liquor.
Throughout the performance, Barbara comprehends that it is more challenging but ultimately more fulfilling to bring affluence to the faith than to assist the impoverished. She also acknowledges that contributions from unscrupulous corporations can be utilized for benevolent purposes if managed properly.
Androcles and the Lion (written 1912): Shaw's interpretation of the classic fable delves into the tale of an escaped servant who shows mercy to a lion with a thorn in its paw. The servant removes the thorn, and years later, he is taken captive by the Romans and forced to face a lion in the Colosseum. The same lion that he had befriended years ago is brought out to fight him. However, the lion refuses to harm the servant, and the emperor orders his release.
In his 1912 play, Shaw explores the lives of slaves awaiting their turn to fight in the Colosseum. He delves into the teachings of Christianity and the followers of the faith, while also criticizing what he perceives to be hypocrisy within religion.
Saint Joan (written 1923): The performance centered around the story of Joan of Arc and her trial. Instead of depicting the protagonists as either virtuous or wicked, the production delved into the causes behind her trial and her own intentions. The director held the view that Joan's accusers were sincere in their convictions, and labeling them as malevolent characters would be a reductionist interpretation of the narrative.
Shaw penned numerous plays prior to his initial triumph with Guns and the Man in 1894. Influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he endeavored to infuse English-language theater with a fresh realism, utilizing his plays to popularize his political, social, and religious concepts. By the turn of the 20th century, his reputation as a playwright was solidified by a series of well-received productions, including Major Barbara, The Doctor's Dilemma, Caesar, and Cleopatra.
Shaw's outlooks often sparked controversy; he advocated for eugenics and alphabet reform while opposing vaccination and organized religion. He sought to remain unpopular by condemning both sides as equally culpable in World War I and censuring British policy towards Ireland in the post-war period, though he was not a republican. These stances did not have a lasting impact on his status or output as a playwright; the interwar years saw the creation of a range of ambitious productions that met with varying degrees of success. In 1938, he submitted the screenplay for the film adaptation of Pygmalion, for which he received an Academy Award. His appetite for politics and controversy persisted; by the late 1920s, he had largely abandoned the gradualism of the Fabian Society and frequently spoke and wrote positively about right- and left-wing dictatorships - he expressed admiration for Mussolini and Stalin. In the last decade of his life, he made fewer public statements, but shortly before his passing at the age of ninety-four, he renounced all public accolades, including the Order of Merit in 1946, and continued to write prolifically.
Scholarly and critical evaluations of Shaw's works have been mixed since his death, but he is consistently ranked second only to Shakespeare among British playwrights; analysts acknowledge his significant influence on generations of English-language playwrights. The term "Shavian" was coined to encompass Shaw's ideas and the manner in which he conveyed them.
