NFPA 77 Static Electricity

D.1.31 Ignition Energy.
The energy required to effect ignition
of a specified fuel mixture under specified conditions of test.
D.1.32 Incendive.
The ability to cause ignition.
D.1.33 Induction.
The process by which charges are moved
to new locations on a conductor by the action of an electric
field or the movement of a conductor into the influence of an
existing electric field.
D.1.34 Induction Bar.
A passive corona device that is con-
nected to ground and that produces corona from the
grounded electrode when highly charged objects are brought
close to it. Ions (corona) will be produced by the electrodes if
the charge on an object and its placement is sufficiently close
that corona onset is achieved.
D.1.35 Ionization.
A process by which a neutral atom or mol-
ecule loses or gains electrons, thereby acquiring a net charge
and becoming an ion.
D.1.36 Joule.
A unit of work and energy equal to 1 watt-second.
D.1.37 Limiting Oxidant Concentration (LOC).
The lowest
molar (or volume) gas-phase concentration of oxidant at
which a specified fuel can propagate a flame.
D.1.38 Lower Flammable Limit (LFL).
The lowest molar (or
volume) concentration of a combustible substance in an oxi-
dizing medium that will propagate a flame.
D.1.39 Megohmmeter.
A meter used to measure high resis-
tance values and that typically operates at higher test voltages
than standard ohmmeters, usually in the range of 100 volts to
1000 volts.
D.1.40 Minimum Explosible Concentration (MEC).
The low-
est concentration of a combustible dust in air, expressed in
grams per cubic meter, that will propagate a flame.
D.1.41 Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE).
The energy, expressed
in joules, stored in a capacitor that, upon discharge, is just suffi-
cient to effect ignition of the most ignitible mixture of a given
fuel mixture under specified test conditions.
D.1.42 Ohm.
A unit of electric resistance equal to the resis-
tance through which a current of 1 ampere will flow when
there is a potential difference of 1 volt across the current.
