Observation is a powerful technique to understand what a student knows and what he/she could do to improve. Our E.I.L teacher Turakulova Dilafruz gave us an assignment to observe a student and identify achievements and problems which he/she achieved while learning English. At first, finding a student to observe seemed difficult but after I found a student with help of my friends it was not difficult as it seemed. I selected a freshman student from 2213 group Ismatova Muqaddas who studies at the second English faculty in UzSWLU.

At the beginning of my observation, I interviewed her about purpose of learning English, what kind of difficulties she faced while learning English, how many languages she knows, her strengths and weaknesses. During my observation time, I have noticed that she has a variety of abilities, interests and love for learning. She started learning English from a very young age because of her mother wants and while learning it she found difficult to communicating with other people and giving her opinion exactly to the listeners. However, in her learning time, she did not have any misunderstandings from English grammar because her brother always supported and gave help her in any situation. Then she said that “Because of knowing other languages like Russian and Arabic I easily learn English with comparing to these languages”. After that, we talked about purpose of learning English. She answered that, she is learning English for many reasons like studying abroad, travelling around the world and learning new culture and also communicating with different people from all over the world in all aspects of life.
During my observation I have tested her to clarify what kind of learner she is, auditory learner, visual learner or kinaesthetic learner. From test which I examined her I noticed that she is auditory learner because she learns by actively hearing and listening. Moreover, she is likely to be good at remembering conversations and songs. In addition to this, she is good at talking through new concepts and ideas with a group and attending debates. Nevertheless, she distracted by noise and reading slowly, if she tries to learn something, she looks through somewhere that is quiet and away from people. As all people have weakness and strengths, I decided to check her these qualifications by analyzing her grammar knowledge. I gave a test combination of English tenses and article “the”. I set a timer for 15 minutes and I observed her how she works with grammar. While doing her test, she worked with easier tests first and then she did the most difficulties at last. During passing her test she lost consideration, but after few minutes she gathered her mind then continue doing her test. After the time finished, I collected her paper and started checking up. Overall, she did 4 mistakes from Present Perfect tense and three mistakes from article “the”. I have understood that she could not differentiate difference between present perfect and past simple. She had serious mistakes from article “the”. She did mistakes mostly putting article before countries, continents, lakes and deserts. I explained her mistakes and gave a useful advice how to differentiate and how to work with articles and tenses.Lastly, I and she did some speaking practice from IELTS part 3, I have seen that she clearly and without any hesitation expressed her opinions. Furthermore, she kept in touch eye-contact with me and she felt herself freely. Afterwards, I asked her essays which she wrote during her lessons, I read it and found difficult to understand logical organizational structure which includes: introduction, body and conclusion. In her writing she did not write any thesis and there is no any logical connection between sentences.
To sum up, one great benefit of monitoring student allowed me how to work individually and interaction with other students. In my opinion this conversation was really useful for both of us because we exchanged our experiences and knowledge with each other. At last, I counseled her to improve her writing structures and working on grammar mistakes and learn how to gain her consideration while doing tests. Undoubtedly, I think this kind of observation helps me in the future to interact with students and analyzing their mistakes and supporting them working on themselves also improving their self-confidence.
