What is a pronoun?

  • It is a word that is used instead of a noun and still maintains the meaning of the sentence.
    • The man is from Mexico.
    • He is from Mexico.
    • Maria and I are going to the store.
    • We are going to the store.
    • My friends are buying the bread.
    • They are buying it.

Subject Pronouns

  • A subject pronoun is a word that replaces the noun that is doing the action of the sentence.
    • My father works in New York.
    • He works in New York.

  • It is used when talking about a boy, man, or something “masculine”.
  • DON’T forget the accent mark.

Ella 3rd person singular

  • Ella = she or it
  • It is used to talk about a girl or something “feminine”.
  • It sounds like “ay-yah” NOT “el-lah”

Usted Formal You

  • Usted = You (formal and singular)
  • Used to talk to someone you should respect.
  • Ud.
  • It is considered a 3rd person singular pronoun.

Nosotros (as) 1st person plural

  • Used to talk about a group of people that includes you.
  • Nosotras is used when the group is all females.
  • Nosotros is used when the group is either all males or a mixed group of people.

Vosotros(as) 2nd person plural

  • Vosotros(as) is used to address a group of people.
  • It is informal
  • It is used only in Spain.

Ellos 3rd person plural

  • Ellos = They
  • It is used to talk about a group of boys, guys, men, “masculine” objects, or a mixed group.
  • Pronounciation: “ay-yohs”

Ellas 3rd person plural

  • Ellas = they
  • It is used to talk about a group of females or “feminine” objects.
  • Pronounced: “ay-yahs”
