Tasks for seminar 11 Task 1: Theoretical questions 1. According to meaning, form and function, words are divided into what types?

Answer: Parts of speech are traditionally subdivided into notional & functional ones. Notional parts of speech have both lexical & grammatical meanings (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, numerals, statives, pronouns, modal words). Functional parts of speech are characterized mainly by the grammatical meaning while their lexical meaning is either lost completely or has survived in a very weakened form. 3. What are the criteria for syntactic classification of words? Answer: Syntactic are compounds the order of the components of which correspond to the order of the words in free phrases (word combinations) according to the norms of English syntax. For example, the order of the components in the compound’s blackboard, door-handle, etc. (n + n) ?? responds to the order of the words in the word combinations: a black board, a door handle (N + N). Task 2: Classify words (notional words) according to their syntactic functions. Answer: We are to consider the syntactic role of a word in a sentence.
