What is text? The word text can be referred to different both spoken and written languages. Being a final version of writing, a text consists of letters and words. Depending on different communication situations, texts also have different meanings and purposes. Texts are studied in numerous fields, such as literary studies, linguistics, sociology and theology. Types of text Texts can be divided into different types (genres). Text types influence our everyday experience of language, they refer to a specific way of using language that is acceptable in a given situation and culture. Text types has evolved over time and have established practices. Different text types have different styles, structures, and vocabulary. The main types of text types are: Narrative It is a type of text that tells a story using a series of events. Features: - the scene is set in a time and place -characters are introduced -may contain a message for the reader. Examples: picture books, cartoons, mystery, fantasy, adventure, science fiction, historical fiction, fairy tales, myths, legends, fables, plays. Structure of narrative writing 1) Orientation Sets the scene: where and when the story happened and introduces the participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story. 2) Complication Tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main participants. 3) Resolution The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in a sad (tragic) ending 4) Re-orientation
