Phonetics is the study of the sounds that people make when they speak

The objective of teaching phonetics in primary school is to practice the pronunciation of new sounds, stress and intonation of English

Pupils should study English literary pronunciation which constitutes received pronunciation

This is the language of

  • Radio
  • TV
  • Films
  • Cinemas
  • Theatres
  • Videos
  • Schools
  • Universities

It’s important! The basis of all language is SOUND Teaching pronunciation is of no less importance in the developing of reading and writing habits and skills. Wrong pronunciation often leads to misunderstanding.

Teaching a Foreign Language in schools begins with teaching pupils to hear and to speak

The teacher faces the following problems in teaching pupils English pronunciation:

According to Cameron teachers of young learners need:

  • an awareness of how children think and learn
  • skills and knowledge in spoken English to conduct whole lesson orally
  • an ability to identify children’s interests and use them for language teaching (for ex. Pronunciation)
  • to be equipped to teach initial literacy

Pronunciation Drill The teacher should begin a lesson with pronunciation drill. The material should be connected with the lesson pupils study. These may be:

Phonetic drills 1. Listen and repeat the sound /w/ Wait, water, waiter, wax, wake, week, walk, which, want. 2. Remember words with this sound w(h)a /w/ - what, watch, wall wr /r/ - wrong, write 3. Read these words real fast. Twenty, twelve, warm, wish, winter, wonderful, what, week 4. Read and learn by heart proverb with this sound Wealth is nothing without health. 5. Role-play the dialogue -What are you doing here at this time Willie? -I am waiting for Nick. We agreed to meet at 9. 6. Learn by heart the poem. Down comes the snow On a winter day. I make a snowman When I go to play.

Phonetic drills


(Tongue-twisters) Diphtongs [ei] “Play, play”- ducks say, all through the day. [ai] Mike likes to ride a bike.
Consonants /k/ Caroline likes cucumbers, but her cousin Kelly can’t stands cucumbers – she likes carrots and cabbage. /r/ Red lorry, yellow lorry. /h/ How can I help you, Mister Hendricks?

Phonetic drills Vowels If you, Sandy, have two candies, Give one candy to Andy, Sandy. If you Andy have two candies Give one candy to Sandy, Andy.
