Secretariat
Article 14 of the Convention notes that the World
Heritage Committee "shall be assisted by a Secretariat
appointed by the Director-General" of UNESCO. Since
1992 the World Heritage Centre, located at UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris, France, has performed the role of
the Secretariat to the World Heritage Committee
and its Bureau. The Secretariat is responsible
for the daily administrative and technical management of the
Convention. The World Heritage Centre prepares
the documentation for the Committee and its
Bureau and has the responsibility for the
implementation of their decisions.
Series
A series of cultural or natural properties
situated in different geographical locations may be
proposed for inclusion in the World Heritage List in a
single nomination provided they are related because
they belong to:
(i) the same historico-cultural group or
(ii) the same type of property which is
characteristic of the geographical zone
(iii) the same geomorphological formation, the same
biogeographic province, or the same ecosystem
type
and provided that it is the series as such, and not
its components taken individually, which is of outstanding
universal value (UNESCO February 1996: 6, Paragraph 19).
