Short description of Urgench city
Urgench is a city in Khorezm, in Uzbekistan. It is a relatively new city, founded under the Russian Empire in the 19th century. An older city called Urgench was abandoned in the 18th century when a shift in a river course cut off its water supply. Before that it was an important Silk Road city and a provincial capital of the Persian Empire. Today it is just a small town, Konye Urgench, in neighboring Turkmenistan. The estimated population of Urgench in 2021 was 145,000 an increase from 139,100 in 1999. It lies on the Amu Darya River and the Shavat canal. The city is situated 450 km (280 mi) west of Bukhara across the Kyzylkum Desert. The history of the city goes back to the second half of the 19th century. The city should not be confused with the similarly-named city of Konye-Urgench. According to the geographical location of the province, it is located between 40°-31° and 42° north latitudes and 60°-62° east longitudes. The area is 280 km from north-west to south-east, and 80 km from west to east in the width where the city of Urganach is located. The northernmost point of the region corresponds to Nuronbabo grove near Olchin village of Gurlan district. The southern end point is located a little south of Tupraqkala.
Khorezm region is divided into two parts in terms of land structure. It can be divided into a large northern part, 100-110 m above sea level, and a remote southern part, 120-150 m above sea level. The climate of the region is sharply continental, and due to the fact that its territory is surrounded by sands, the temperature rises to +43°+45°C in summer. According to the administrative territorial structure, Khorezm region is divided into 11 districts and the cities of Urganch and Khiva.
