Mechanical engineering is all about working with machines. These machines can
range from elevators to escalators to air conditioners to refrigerators. Mechanical
engineers are involved in many different parts of the process, from design to
production to safety. A major recent accomplishment of mechanical engineering was
the development of the first 3D printer that could be sold in stores.
As the name suggests, electrical engineering has to do with electricity. This could be
any electrical system, from the electrical system in your cell phone to the electrical
system in your car to the electrical system in an office building. It is electrical
engineers' job to figure out how to make these systems work and stay working.
Look at all the things around you that are made of plastic. Did you know that
chemical engineers work to create that plastic? Pretty cool! Chemical engineering is
not the same thing as chemistry. In fact, chemical engineering is a blend of chemistry,
math, physics and biology all in one. Chemical engineers work with a variety of
chemicals, from the chemicals used in processing food to the chemicals in your
clothes to the chemicals in medicine.

Robotic Engineers and Robots
Robots are just machines that can do a particular task easier, faster, and better than
humans could do it. You might even have a robot in your home. Today, we can buy
robot vacuums that travel around our carpets to keep them clean all the time so we
don't have to use a vacuum ourselves!
There are also robots that will automatically keep your lawn mowed and, believe it or
not, there's a robot that will change the litter in the litter box for your pet cat! Even
though these robots don't look like people, they're still robots. Robots are invented by
robotics engineers.
Robotics engineers are scientists who think of ways that people can use robots. They
need to figure out what the robot needs to be able to do, decide what materials to
make the robot from, and then come up with a way to make the robot actually work!
Robotics engineers invent some robots that entertain people. Have you ever played
with a remote-controlled car or plane? That's actually a robot! It's a machine that's
being controlled by a person. You may also have seen robots in amusement parks,
where they might be part of rides or shows.
