Roads, Airports and Bridges
Look around. Without a structural engineer, most of what you see around you probably wouldn't be there! A structural engineer is someone who uses math and science to invent, design, build, and care for structures, such as houses, roads, bridges, dams, and airports. What's a Structure?Think about some structures around you. What do they have in common? All structures must be designed by engineers so that they can bear, or hold up, a particular load.
For example, a bridge has to be able to hold the weight of the people, cars, and trucks that will cross over it every day. If it can't bear that load, it will collapse. Structural engineers study the load that each structure must bear and figure out how to design a structure that can withstand that load.

Civil engineering
Civil engineering is all about construction. Building skyscrapers, bridges and roads is all done under the supervision of a civil engineer. One of their main priorities is how these things can be built safely. How scary would it be if a bridge collapsed almost every time someone crossed over it?! Thanks civil engineers for keeping everyone safe! Civil engineers also come in handy after times of destruction, such as after September 11th or Hurricane Katrina. Their expertise was needed to build Freedom Tower in New York City, as well as reconstruct the levee that broke in New Orleans.
Mechanical engineering is all about working with machines. These machines can range from elevators to escalators to air conditioners to refrigerators. Mechanical engineers are involved in many different parts of the process, from design to production to safety. A major recent accomplishment of mechanical engineering was the development of the first 3D printer that could be sold in stores.
As the name suggests, electrical engineering has to do with electricity. This could be any electrical system, from the electrical system in your cell phone to the electrical system in your car to the electrical system in an office building. It is electrical engineers' job to figure out how to make these systems work and stay working.
Look at all the things around you that are made of plastic. Did you know that chemical engineers work to create that plastic? Pretty cool! Chemical engineering is not the same thing as chemistry. In fact, chemical engineering is a blend of chemistry, math, physics and biology all in one. Chemical engineers work with a variety of chemicals, from the chemicals used in processing food to the chemicals in your clothes to the chemicals in medicine.
