The Style of Official Documents and its Substyles

  1. Language of business letters;

  2. Language of legal documents;

  3. Language of diplomacy;

  4. Language of military documents; The aim:

  1. to reach agreement between two contracting parties;

  2. to state the conditions binding two parties in an understanding. Each of substyles of official documents makes use of special terms. Legal documents: military documents, diplomatic documents. The documents use set expressions inherited from early Victorian period. This vocabulary is conservative. Legal documents contain a large proportion of formal and archaic words used in their dictionary meaning. In diplomatic and legal documents many words have Latin and French origin. There are a lot of abbreviations and conventional symbols.

The most noticable feature of grammar is the compositional pattern. Every document has its own stereotyped form. The form itself is informative and tells you with what kind of letter we deal with.
Business letters contain: heading, addressing, salutation, the opening, the body, the closing, complimentary clause, the signature. Syntactical features of business letters are - the predominance of extended simple and complex sentences, wide use of participial constructions, homogeneous members.
Morphological peculiarities are passive constructions, they make the letters impersonal. There is a tendency to avoid pronoun reference. Its typical feature is to frame equally important factors and to divide them by members in order to avoid ambiguity of the wrong interpretation.
World related to clothing items are peculiar to colloquial style, though some words of this group can be in different situations variable meanings. But the number of such words are very few, usually they are used in fields related to everyday situations.
An important thing about the words related to clothing items is that they are almost always used in everyday conversations. Our analysis of such words showed that in the speech of people we can meet everyday. For example, in situations when we usually want to describe somebody’s appearance. And besides, these words are widely used by sellers, designers, stylists and in the sphere of textile. The analysis showed that both English and Uzbek people usually use these words as it belongs to everyday speech. In many situations some difficulties may arise in translation and understanding the meaning of the clothing items. Because many words are used in another meaning, i.e. quite another item may be meant. For example, when English people say “suit” they mean the complex of 3 or 4 items, i.e. the suit, trousers and shirt. But the word “suit” is translated into Uzbek as one item. There are so many examples of this kind like for example, in English “jacket” is quite another type of clothing. But in Uzbek it means waistcoat.
Having analyzed many dictionaries with items of clothing we found many differences between English and Uzbek languages. In English the word “leggings” means trousers worn by women and girls that stretch and fit very closely to their legs. But in Uzbek it may be translated as stockings.
In Uzbek language we have no the exact translation of the word “cardigan”, that’s why while translating into Uzbek we should give definition instead of the exact translation or equivalent.
The English word “tights” may be understood in Uzbek in two meanings. The first one is as leggings or running trousers and the second one is as women’s piece of clothing that tightly covers the feet and legs up to the waist. That’s why some misunderstandings may arise while translating, so one should define it according to the context.
