Including lots of discussion of examples and non-examples of the word
The more students are able to discuss the words including synonyms and
antonyms, usage of the word, and contexts, the better the student will understand it.
Group discussion is especially important for struggling readers and ELL students.
As you're discussing the words, poll your class to see how well they understand the
words. You may have a few student "experts" who are able to convey meaning to
students well too, so tapping into their leadership qualities can also improve
motivation to learn. You might use a technique called Carousel Brainstorm to
allow discussions. All you do is display the word at the top of chart paper and send
groups of students around to each chart. They record as much as they know about
the word in an allotted amount of time and then either the group moves or the
paper moves for the next word. Groups read what previous groups have written
and add to it each time. In this demo, you see different colored markers are used.
Using activities that reach all learning styles
When you are teaching vocabulary, be sure to include activities that include all
learning styles. Most of us do well with auditory and visual options, but we often
lack kinesthetic options. Whole Brain Teaching techniques have been shown to be
very effective for long term retention of information. You can also sing, chant, and
role play with words too. Even if you can't come up with motions for a word's
meaning, just getting your kids up and moving may help those kinesthetic learners
better understand the word's meaning.
Celebrating words by making them visible in your classroom
With the increased rigor we see in our standards, motivation and student
engagement are more important than ever. If students see that WE value words,

29
then the students will feel they are important too. We need to showcase that
learning by keeping attention on our growing word walls by making sure they are
used and expanded. By using techniques such as Word of the Day and
spotlighting ah-ha moments in discovering a new word in our read alouds, we
demonstrate the importance to our students which leads them to be active thinkers
as they read and learn versus passive.
Talking The Talk
Another example of real-life usage of technical English is in computer science. As
you may know, computer science majors come from all walks of life, from every
nation on earth and from every social stratum. Even though they may not share a
native tongue, they all speak the language of machine coding. A foundation in
Technical English provides the common vocabulary and grammar to bring global
computer sciences together.
The same goes for agriculture, auto mechanics, and biotech engineering. No matter
how complex the topic, technical English will break it down to simple ingredients
(but despite being simple, those ingredients won’t always be clear for the average
speaker).
Why You Need Technical English
To begin with, technical English helps you gain basic and industry-specific
language skills for business and work-related communication.
Next, depending on specific sector technical English can be surprisingly simple
(even simpler than standard everyday English) and might clarify language by
shortening word meanings and writing rules. For example, a word like “test” is
used only as a noun, (“I flunked the test”). It’s not a verb, (“The exam tested my
patience”). Also, “close” is done to a door; it doesn’t mean “nearby.”

30
In general, sometimes non-English speaking students find technical English easier
to grasp. For many, that means communicating better with bosses and co-workers.
And better communication leads to better understanding and collaboration which
in their turn often bring fruitful results both in personal and professional life.
On top of that, learning to read, write, and speak technical English makes
communication clearer and more effective which is very helpful in speaking and
writing (including writing better emails, giving better presentations, etc.) in general
English.
Confidence Boost
Ultimately, being able to connect with suppliers, clients, and coworkers gives
workers and business professionals a higher level of comfort. For starters, technical
English allows you to be comfortable with complex documents, manuals, and other
documents as well as confidently check orders, equipment, and projects. Technical
English also makes math terms simple.
Overall, technical English helps readers of English-language documents —
especially non-native English speakers — understand what they read.
What is Simplified Technical English?
If you are into technical English you will inevitably encounter the Simplified
Technical English (STE) which sounds very similar, but in fact a different thing
and you need to know how to make the difference between the two (it can be a
little confusing).
A little bit of history: STE started in the airline industry. European mechanics had
trouble doing the same tasks as American and British mechanics because of
language barriers. Differences in notation made it hard to know original parts from
compatible parts. All of the airline experts agreed on Simplified Technical English
as a new standard.

31
As we noted above STE is not the same thing as general technical English. But
STE is a great example of a controlled language that still exists in the aerospace
industry and makes things a lot easier if this is your field.
It’s true that over time, STE grew beyond its original audience, and is now used in
a variety of other industries.
But technical English is a much broader term, so don’t confuse them.
Practice Technical English
Probably the best (and perhaps the easiest) way to master technical English is
practicing it.
Unfortunately, you are unlikely to find a lot of information on technical English in
the field of your choice. So, it makes sense taking the initiative and starting to learn
technical English by practicing it or in other simpler words by reading and
understanding documents in technical English.
This can be a little hard at the beginning, but as you learn and memorize the new
words your understanding will start to improve.
Practice makes perfect, so open an owner’s manual and see if you can break the
wording down to its basics.
