Homework Task Nineteen
With a partner in your in-service program at the Innovation Center, please look over each other’s plans and discern what you would like to observe and how you would observe. Observe each other’s lessons and finally write an observation report on your colleague’s micro teaching.
Firstly, I will begin the report by describing the general atmosphere of the classroom. First and foremost, the classroom was an anxious free environment. This was demonstrated through the communicative nature that the class adopted; interesting and insightful discussions took place throughout the lesson. On the whole, interactions where mainly teacher fronted like that of typical classroom discourse.
However, learner initiative was also present an example of this is how learners would question teacher comments. Whilst the majority of the discussion was teacher to learner, discussions also occured between the learners themselves in the form of pairs and small groups. Despite the communicative atmosphere of the classroom, the main teaching strategy deployed was the grammar translation method. Furthermore, learners in this classroom had both written and spoken communication skills. Learners were required to translate in the spoken form as well as written i.e. translate aloud.
Although there was no repetition. Additionally, the emphasis on translation is indicative of Grammar-Translation. On the other hand, the translation session might be teacher making sure the students have the "tools" to understand the text. In that case, there is focus on meaning.
Generally, the lesson seems characteristic of a variety of methods because there was focus on translation, writing, speaking. In addition, the teacher seems to be both an authority, and a helper and facilitator of activities.
