Abstract. The objective of this article is to determine the role of the precedent phenomenon in the process of creating literary works. In the course, the examples of precedent units found in the literary works were identified and analyzed. According to the linguistics, the precedent phenomena include poetic and prosaic quotations from literary works, the names of literary and musical works, phrases from movies and songs, slogans of advertising, jokes and biblical expressions, names of literary heroes, historical personalities and political figures. Various precedent phenomena may change; some precedent texts or names are forgotten and are not precedent any more, and other texts, on the contrary, become precedent for a long time. In our article, the analysis of the scientific research conducted on this term and its place in the field of literature are highlighted. Precedent units are studied from the positions of the lingo-cognitive theory of precedent phenomena.
Key words: precedent phenomena, lingo-cognitive theory, literary works, precedent utterance, communicative complexities.
Introduction. As we know, in the field of literature, the communication between the author and the reader takes place through the means of the literary text. Precedent units in linguistic and cultural studies are also one of such literary tools. In the process of reading literature not only in Uzbek, but also in other languages, the reader encounters precedent units in order to perceive the artistry and apparent content in it. If the reader does not know the language and culture, does not have any understanding about it, he will not be able to fully understand the content of the existing works. The study of precedent units fills the gaps in the student's knowledge and reveals the content that the author of the work wants to cover. In a word, "precedent events of a literary text are a form of reflection of the author's picture of the world[1.B.12].
In a language it is possible to recognize expressions where the overall meaning does not reduce to the meaning of words they consist of. Idioms may serve as a distinctive example of this type of expressions. Words which compose an idiom lose their primary meaning, and it is the combination of words, the whole expression, that renders the meaning. Speakers pick up idioms from the old generation without considering their origin. However, there are expressions which function like idioms, but people still remember where they come from. The notion of this remembering in each particular instance is necessarily variable. Sometimes speakers do not know where exactly the expression comes from, but they have a feeling that it has a source. These expressions may be represented by proper nouns or set phrases. They may refer to different historical events or political figures or well-known books and films. In linguistics these specific language units are called precedent phenomena (henceforth PP). During the last 25 years the concept of PP has been developed significantly. As a result, “precedent phenomenon” now serves as an umbrella term for various loosely related notions such as literary allusion, cultural reference, idiom and proverb[2.B.3].
