According to this formula, a vowel by itself may form a syllable. The vowel of a syllable may be preceded by up to three consonants and followed by up to four consonants. The following syllables exist in English: V as in "are", CV as in "saw", VC as in "up", CVC as in "cat", CCV as in "play", VCC as in "apt", CCVC as in "stop", CCVCC as in "plant", CCCV as in "stray", CCCVCC as in "strand", CCCVCCC as in "scripts", and CVCCC as in "texts" (Khalil,1999:25).
