The Syllable in English and Arabic: a contrastive Study

c. The Phonological Approach theory 
In this approach, the syllable is functionally defined with reference to the 
structure of the particular language rather than in general phonetic terms with 
universal application. Permissible sound combinations and consonant clusters 
in one language can help identifying possible positions of phonemes within a 
syllable. In English, for instance, one or more consonants can occur in each 
margin while a monophthong or diphthong usually occurs in the centre, thus, 
/s/, /st/ and /str/ are allowed to occupy marginal position in a syllable 
(Ladefoged, 1982: 223). 
1.2 The Nature of the Syllable 
The syllable is a very important unit. Most people seem to believe that, 
even if they cannot define what a syllable is, they can count how many 
syllables there are in a given word or sentence. Following Roach (2009: 70), 
the syllable may be defined both phonetically and phonologically, i.e., 
according to the way it is produced and the way it sounds and according to its 
constituents. Looking at syllables from a phonological point of view involves 
looking at the possible combinations of English phonemes; the study of the 
possible phoneme combinations of a language is called phonotactics (ibid.). 
1.3 The Structure of the Syllable 
Syllables are usually described as consisting of a centre which has little or 
no obstruction to airflow and which sounds comparatively loud; before and
