Australia State & Capital
Australia and Australian Capital Territory / Canberra The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is the capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and its smallest self-governing internal territory. It is an inland enclave in New South Wales, situated in bushland. New South Wales / Sydney New South Wales (abbreviated as NSW) is Australia's most populous state, located in the south-east of the country, north of Victoria and south of Queensland. It was founded in 1788 and originally comprised much of the Australian mainland, as well as New Zealand, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. During the 19th century large areas were successively separated to form the British colonies of Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand. Victoria / Melbourne Victoria is a state located in the south-eastern corner of Australia. It is the smallest mainland state in area, but the most densely populated and urbanised. Victoria began in the 1830s as a farming community. The discovery of gold in 1851 transformed it into a leading industrial and commercial centre. Victoria is the second most populous Australian state, after New South Wales, with an estimated population of 5,037,700 as at September 2005. Melbourne is Victoria's capital and largest city, with more than 70% of all Victorians living there. Queensland / Brisbane Queensland is a state of Australia, occupying the north-eastern corner of the mainland continent. The state is Australia's second largest by area, following Western Australia, and the country's third most populous after New South Wales and Victoria. Western Australia / Perth Western Australia is Australia's largest state in area, covering the western third of the mainland, and is bordered by South Australia and the Northern Territory. It is, after the Sakha Republic in Russia, the second largest sub national entity (statoid) in the world. The capital city, Perth, is the most isolated city of over one million people in the world, being 2,104 km (1307 miles) from Adelaide. South Australia / Adelaide South Australia is a state of Australia in the southern central part of the country. It covers some of the most arid parts of the continent and with a total land area of 984,377 square kilometres (380,070 sq mi), it is the fourth largest of Australia's eight states and territories. The majority of its people reside in the state capital, Adelaide, with most of the remainder settled in fertile areas along the south-eastern coast and River Murray. Tasmania / Hobart Tasmania, an Australian state, is located 200 kilometers south of the eastern side of the continent, being separated from it by Bass Strait. The state of Tasmania includes the island of Tasmania, and other surrounding islands. Northern Territory / Darwin The Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia. The capital city is Darwin; the other two sizable settlements are Alice Springs and Katherine. Residents of the Northern Territory are often known simply as 'Territorians'. It is the largest territory in Australia by area. Download 14.57 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
