Introduction: What are the different scales in Geography?
ITT – What information should we include when describing the location of a city? Try to think of three pieces of information that you could include when describing the location of a city. Using your shared ideas write a description of the location of Hull. You can use an Atlas to help.
Site – the reason why the place was chosen for a city. Example – Hull was chosen for a site for a settlement because it is a near a river. Therefore, fishing developed and jobs were available for people. Situation – where a place is in relation to other places. Example – Hull is located 40kms to the east of York.
London is situated in the south east of England. It is located on the River Thames. London is situated 75km south east of Oxford. The M25 runs around London. A number of other motorways lead to London. These include the M1, M11 and M23. London is sited here because the land is flat and easy to build on. Being located on a river London developed as a port. This created many jobs so people moved to the area.
