We offer a wide selection of programs to accommodate all ages and levels. Appropriate athletic wear and proper footwear are recommended. All programs are co-ed unless otherwise indicated. Participants are advised to consult a doctor before enrolling in any fitness program. Being active for at least 150 minutes per week can lead to improved: • Fitness • Strength • Mental health (morale & self-esteem) Source: Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, csep.ca/guidelines Integration Services may be requested if an individual requires assistance to participate in recreation programs. Fitness Program Descriptions The following fitness programs are not available at all locations, refer to the fitness program listings to see what your local community recreation centre has to offer or visit toronto.ca/fitness. Aqua Fitness Courses For program listings and course descriptions see the Swimming section. Cardio Courses Suitable for all levels, focusing on providing a minimum of 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercises that use large muscle groups in a continuous and rhythmic manner. Most classes also include a muscle conditioning component. Regular participation can help improve your cardiovascular system (heart/lungs), flexibility, balance and co-ordination. Small equipment may be used. Cardio Low Impact – A cardiovascular focused fitness class for all levels with low impact choreography. Intensity can vary from low to high levels. Gentle Fit – A gentle, slow-paced class for all ages and fitness levels; appropriate for people with low bone density or osteoporosis. Some classes have floor work and others use chairs for the conditioning portion. Cardio High/Low – A cardiovascular focused fitness class for all levels with options for different levels of impact. Intensity levels can vary from low to high levels. Cardio and Sculpt – This class is half Cardio High/Low and half Body Sculpt. Cardio Mix – A fitness class incorporating a variety of cardio choices, i.e. step, high/low, kick boxing which will vary from week to week. Step – A cardiovascular focused class using a step platform. Walk Fit – A class involving brisk, rhythmic, vigorous walking intended to improve cardiovascular efficiency, muscular strength and endurance. Cardio Kick Boxing – Build speed, control and power using punching and kicking techniques while getting a cardio workout. Boot Camp – This class will challenge you to improve your cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and endurance levels through group, partnered and solo exercises using circuit, interval or plyometric training. Osteo Fit – Weight-bearing exercises will build and maintain stronger bones while increasing muscle strength which is suitable for anyone with low bone density or osteoporosis. Cardio Dance Courses Suitable for all levels, classes incorporate various culture inspired music and dance movements to create a dynamic, exciting, aerobic workout. Participants will benefit by having a total body fun workout that improves rhythm, burns calories and strengthens muscles. Classes may include a muscle conditioning component. Cardio Dance – This class incorporates various culture inspired music and dance movements to create a dynamic, exciting, aerobic workout. Participants will benefit by having a total body workout that improves rhythm, burns calories and strengthens muscles. Cardio NIA – NIA is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Cardio Socasize ® – A creative blend of high/low impact aerobics combined with Caribbean dance moves. Cardio Bollywood – An energetic cardiovascular exercise dance routine that modernizes the high-energy classical Indian and folk dances by blending traditional Bhangra dance steps with Bollywood moves. Cardio Hip Hop – This is a Cardio Dance class with movements taken from current dance trends. Zumba ® – This is a Latin inspired Cardio Dance class. Zumba Toning ® – This is a Latin inspired Body Sculpting class using light weights. Zumba Gold ® – This is a Latin inspired, low impact, Cardio Dance class for Older Adults. Zumba Kids ® – This is a Latin inspired Cardio Dance class for Children. Muscle Conditioning Courses Suitable for all levels, focusing on building bone mass, muscular strength and endurance with no cardio component. Classes may be specific to certain areas of the body and may use equipment such as body bars, stability balls, BOSU, hand weights and exercise bands. Body Sculpt – This class emphasizes full body conditioning with a focus on muscle strength and endurance. Body Sculpt: Core – This class emphasizes strengthening the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, and pelvic area. Body Sculpt: Lower Body – A class focusing on strengthening the muscles of the legs, gluteus and core. Toronto and East York District – Fall 2017/Winter 2018 Fitness 21 Learn to Weight Train – Participants will learn proper weight training techniques required to use both free weights and strength equipment in the weight room. Stretch – This class provides stretching exercises that promote flexibility for the whole body. Stretch and Strength – This class focuses on improving posture and flexibility by strengthening and stretching the muscles and of the body. T.I.M.E. – Together In Movement and Exercise - In partnership with Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, a modified exercise program suitable for adults with mobility challenges, who can walk at least 10 metres and may use a cane or walker. Exercises are designed to increase strength, balance, mobility and overall health. Participants screening is required prior to registration. Smart Start – A small group class designed for those recovering from or living with illness. Seated, standing and moving exercises, train balance and muscle conditioning. This class is the next step for those who have completed the T.I.M.E. program. Pilates Courses Build longer, leaner muscles while safely exploring optimal strength, flexibility and endurance. Exercises focus on strengthening core postural, abdominal and back muscles. Participants are required to bring their own mat. Yoga Courses A series of postural exercises and breathing techniques to improve flexibility, strength and muscle tone; various styles are offered. Participants are required to bring their own mat. Yoga – A series of postures promoting flexibility, specific breathing and relaxation techniques, while strengthening and toning muscles. Yoga: Hatha – This class includes gentle stretches with traditional standing and floor poses. Yoga: Power – This class moves quickly through a series of athletic poses which builds strength, stamina and flexibility. Yoga: Kundalini – This class includes the use of dynamic breathing techniques, chanting, mantras and meditation, along with traditional poses. Meditation – Breathing and meditation techniques are used to achieve body and mind relaxation. Yoga: Chair – This is a Hatha Yoga class adapted to use a chair throughout the class or for support while standing. Yoga/Pilates Fusion – This class combines the benefits of Yoga and Pilates into one class. Participants learn the fundamentals of proper breathing and correct body alignment in a relaxing atmosphere. This class encourages strong abdominals, a supple spine and overall flexibility. Post Natal Fitness Courses Classes designed for the specific needs after pregnancy. New moms/ caregivers can participate with their babies in a welcoming and comfortable environment. Post Natal Fitness – This baby friendly program allows new moms to participate in an exercise class with their babies in the room. Each class involves cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance components with a focus on postnatal specific core work and flexibility. This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with other new moms in your community. (Babies up to 12 months or not yet walking) Caregiver and Baby Courses Courses are designed for the parent/caregiver. Babies up to 12 months or not yet walking are welcome. Fitness: Caregiver and Baby – This fitness class is designed specifically for new parents/caregivers to attend with their baby up to 12 months or not yet walking. Yoga: Caregiver and Baby – This yoga class is designed specifically for new parents/caregivers to attend with their baby up to 12 months or not yet walking. Stroller Fit – This class is designed with you and your baby in mind. Muscular strength and conditioning and cardiovascular training is included. Programs take placed outdoors. Strollers are required. Family Fitness Courses Classes are designed to encourage families to participate in regular physical activity together in a welcoming and comfortable environment. Each individual must register for this class, fees vary based on age. Fitness-Family – This fitness class is designed for parents to participate together with their child(ren) as a family. The format of this class may vary from week to week. Yoga-Family – This yoga class is designed for parents to participate together with their child(ren). Yoga: Caregiver and Child – This yoga class is designed for parents/ caregiver to participate together with their child. Older Adult Fitness Courses For program listings, refer to the Older Adult section. Tai Chi Courses Emphasis is on general health and fitness through the development of slow and controlled movements in a fixed sequence. Enjoy the benefits of improved health, relief of stress and the promotion of concentrated relaxation. Various styles are offered. Tai Chi – A style of martial arts involving fluid movement sequences; Tai Chi improves flexibility, balance, strength, coordination and mental concentration. Tai Chi: Wu Style – A style of martial arts involving small, quick movements in a narrow standing position; Tai Chi improves flexibility, balance, strength, coordination and mental concentration.
