Using music and songs in teaching English in Uzbekistan by non-native English teachers

The result of the quantitative observation
The results of the quantitative observation showed that music and songs in teaching were indeed really helpful. It is clear that there are always strengths and weaknesses but many participants as well as teachers admitted that application of music and songs in teaching English helped to improve various subskills of students. It is clear that the improvements were witnessed in both classes over time. However, the significant improvements were witnessed in the experimental group, especially in their speaking and listening skills. From the graphs provided below we can see that the number of students who did great in their tests devoted to each subskill increased significantly in the experimental group. Even though some improvements were observed in the control group, they were not that big. (less than half of the class managed to show satisfying results, others in the group either failed or showed less than was expected). This experiment demonstrated that music and songs were especially useful for those with difficulties with speaking and listening.


The questionnaire also showed how helpful was the experiment. In this questionnaire 40 students from experimental class were asked to rank different ways in which music was believed to help them. While there were some students who believed that music helped the a little, most of them agreed that music and songs definitely were practical and really helpful.

In addition to this questionnaire, I gave the teachers who taught different skills to the experimental class another questionnaire and asked them to rate the difficulty of particular activities on a scale from 1 to 5. 5 teachers who were responsible for the experimental class shared their opinion about the given questions. The results show that teachers found teaching speaking and listening far easier than other two skills while using music and songs.
