UZBEK EQUIVALENTS OF ENGLISH PROVERBS

Annotation:Nowaday , we know there are so many similarities between languages 
such as English and Uzbek. However,the differentiate of the languages according to their 
life , beliefs and also nationality. And also different scholars classify the proverbs of the 
English language differently according to distribution degree.
Key words :proverb ,equivalent compounds , equivalents of phrases , phraseological 
point of view. 
 
INTRODUCTION 
As we know , a proverb is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and 
repeated , which expresses a truth ,based on common sense or the practical experience of 
humanity. Also, we tried to compare proverbs in two languages .For example, he who 
laughs last laughs longest ( it is said to emphasize that those who have control of a 
situation are most successful in thr end , even if you had seemed originally to have and 
advantage . Don’t rejoice too soon , then . Your delight at your own good fortune may be 
premature ).In uzbek version : “ Yaxshi ot keyin chopadi . “ Likewise , we can find such as 
proverbs in different languages . 
Nowadays ,some researches are being carried out in order to determine as well as to 
compare their differences. Also, it is clear that these are linguistic markers that make those 
similarities evident. 
Discussion: A proverb is a brief statement that offers guidance or teaches you 
something about life. Both uzbek and English proverbs are obviously important . Some 
English proverbs not containing numerals have numeric elements in Uzbek equivalents : Be 
up with the Lark – Uch kun barvaqt turgan turgan bir kun yutar ; No great loss without 
some small gain – Har bir qiyinchilikning rohati bor ; Much cry little wool – Bir tomchi suv 
chumoliga daeyo ko’rinar.
“ Proverbs ,as we have said , contain the history , history ,origins ,and other valuable 
information of each nation.There is a saying among the Uzbek people , “Close the oven 
when it’s hot “. The proverb teaches us to do everything on time . The same is true of the 
saying , “Press the iron in the heat .” If you pay attention , you will see that the proverb is 
unique to the peoples of Central Asia. After all , the tandir exists only in our countries

.Things that do the same thing may exist in other nations .But it’s not called a tandir , and it 
doesn’t look like us. * Bozorova Viloyat Muzaffarovna , Maqsudova Mokhigul Usmonovna + 
Also , we can see so many similarities in two languages and we use this types of 
proverbs especially to define and compere languages features . We can see some examples 
in the following lists :
1 The ambassador brings no pain .
( Elchiga o’lim yo’q ) 
2 Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth . 
( Uzumini yeng-u ammo bog’ini surishtirmang ) 
3 A friend in need is a friend indeed . 
( Yaxshi do’st kulfatda bilinadi ) 
4 He who has caused his own pain , cries to himself . 
( O’zing pishirgan osh ,endi aylanib ham o’rgilib ham o’zing yeysan ) 
5 The cowl does not make the monk . 
( Odamning kiyimiga qarab baho berma ) 
6 The hasty cat gave birth to blind kittens . 
( Shoshgan qiz erga yolchimaydi ) 
7 Better one day as alion than a hundred as sheep . 
( Ho’kizning orqa oyog’i bo’lgandan buzoqning boshi bo’lgan yaxshi ) 
8 The cat goes to the lard so often that she leaves her paw print. 
( Qing’ir ishning qiyig’I qirq yilda ham chiqadi ) 
9 Better be alone than in bad company . 
( Nomard do’stdan ko’ra mard dushman yaxshi )
10 Every cockroach is beautiful to his mother . 
( Qo’ng’iz ham bolasini oppog’im deydi ; Tipratikan ham bolasini yumshog’im deydi ) 
In the current life , we can observe so many similarities in languages as the given 
examples . And also so many sientists are doing some researchs to analyze the similarity in 
two languages. “ English and Uzbek proverbs with animal figures have the same semantic 
meaning. But we cannot say that they all have the same opinion . For example : “ The 
great fish eat up the small “ , a proverb in Uzbek “Katta baliq kichigini yeydi “, provide 
translation .
According to G. L. “ Permiakov , the generalization property of instances is that when 
similar or indentical situations are combined , a new outcome results. The proverbs’ 
consistency assures their universiality and oftentimes gives them a special logical meaning. 
It follows that the idea that the world of proverbs is comparable to world civilization , 
which is exclusive to one country ,is wholly false . Paremiology’s central concept of 
universality in proverbs generalizes parallels and similarities in proverbs , even in different 
languages , independent of their historical or racial origins “ * 2+ . Additionally , some 
proverbs in Uzbek are functionally similar to English proverbs . For example , Avval o’yla 
keyin so’yla status in Uzbek is an alternative variant Think first – then say corresponds to

the proverb , because this proverb has the same meaning in both languages and its 
grammatical system very close . For example , in English : Give a dog a bad name and 
hang him. Uzbek equivalent : Yomon atalib tirik yurguncha , Yaxshi atalib o’lgan yaxshi. He
that lies down with dogs must rise up with fleas . Uzbek equivalent : Yaxshiga yondashsang 
, yetarsan murodga , Yomonga yondashsang , qolarsan uyatga . In English : A good dog 
deserves a good bone . Uzbek equivalent : Yaxshiga ipak ilashur , yomonga tikan ilashur .
