The aim of my course paper. In 1771, the first work of an Indian in English, A Sermon Preached at the Execution of Moses Paul, an Indian, by Samson Occom, of the Mohegan tribe, was published and went through 19 editions. The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta (1854) by John Rollin Ridge (Cherokee, 1827-1867) was the first novel by a Native American, and O-gi-maw-kwe Mit-I-gwa -ki (Queen of the Woods) ) (1899) by Simon Pokagon (Potawatomi, 1830-1899) was "the first Native American novel written on the subject of Indian life".
An important event in the development of Native American literature in English was the 1969 awarding of the Pulitzer Prize to N. The Thirteen Colonies are often considered the center of early American literature. However, the first European colonies in North America had been established elsewhere many years earlier, and the dominance of English in American culture remained unclear. The first paper was printed in Pennsylvania in German and was the largest book printed in any pre-Revolutionary colony. Spanish and French have two of the strongest colonial literary traditions in the regions that make up the United States today, and discussions of early American literature often include texts by Samuel de Champlain along with texts in English by Thomas Harriot and Captain John Smith. The course paper includes introduction, main part, conclusion and list of references. The main part includes Numerous oral literary traditions have existed on the continent among various Native American tribes. However, political events would eventually make English the lingua franca as well as the literary language of choice for the colonies as a whole. These events include the British occupation of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam in 1664, the British changing its name to New York, and changing the administrative language from Dutch to English.
