AMERICAN WOMEN-WRITERS OF THE 19TH CENTURY AND THE MAIN THEMES OF THEIR WORKS

19th century female writers who should always be remembered

Women have always been literature. We have always loved to express ourselves in words and writing. Some of the earliest known works are believed to have been written by women. Scholars consider Ann Bradstreet the first American female poet. One of my favorite poems, The Thunder, Perfect Mind, was written by a woman and dates back to the second or third century. However, the slow global shift towards the acceptance of women in the public sphere has largely prevented them from publishing their works publicly. This changed rapidly in the 19th century, and women have always been key players in various publishing industries. So many women emerged as writers in the mid to late 1800s that it's sometimes easy to forget all that they accomplished and contributed. Here are five of my favorite female writers from the 19th century and why they are always remembered.
Italy B. Barnet's Well
Ida B. Wells Barnett has become more known in recent years for her work on suffrage and for her most famous refusal to stand behind white delegates in their suffrage march. elected in 1913 in D.C. What I find lost in the story is that before and after her engagement in social activism, she is a respected and accomplished journalist who rose to prominence early in her career. 4
Wells Barnett was born into slavery in 1862 and sadly lost both her parents in the yellow fever epidemic of 1878. She then began her teaching career in Mississippi to keep her brothers and sisters. children stay together by supporting their needs. She started journalism in 1884 when she wrote about her experience being kicked out of the white carriage on a train for which she had a first-class ticket. She then quickly rose to fame as a journalist, becoming an editor for The Evening Star in D.C. and columnist for The Living Way. In 1889, she became co-owner and editor of Free Speech and Headlight, which would grow its readership before being burned down by a white mob in 1892.
Due to the popularity of his two anti-hanging pamphlets, Southern Terrors: Lynch Law in All Its Stages and The Red Record, Wells Barnett has become one of the most popular writers. of America. She gave lectures throughout England in 1893 and 1894. She remained active in civil rights and women's rights until her death in 1931, working tirelessly. even if she had to raise four children. In 2020, she was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for reporting on violence against African Americans.
Mary J. Holmes
If you ask me, publishing 39 novels with sales of more than 2 million copies in your writing career would make you a successful writer in any century. But if you're also a woman born in 1825 who isn't afraid to address sensitive topics like gender and race, that makes you especially extraordinary. But unfortunately, as with many female writers of the 18th and 19th centuries, this writer's talent and influence has largely been underestimated by historians and scholars, who often consider popular literature to be. lack of artistic value. Mary J. Holmes always wanted to be a writer. Her first story was published in a newspaper when she was 15 years old and her first book when she was 29 years old. This novel, Tempest and Sunshine, is about two sisters' adulthood and their personal victories and hardships in the South before the war. It became one of the most popular books of its time, selling over 250,000 copies. She caught the eye of New York book publishing company Street & Smith, who hired her to write women's books, the first such project for the new company. Although largely excluded from literary canon and history, her works are still widely available today and are excellent additions to the 19th-century collection.
