INTRODUCTION
Traditional linguistic theory works with two principal units of linguistic depiction: the word and the sentence. Both of these units are given down to earth acknowledgment within the traditions of distinctive writing systems. For occasion, within the different alphabetic frameworks utilized for European dialects, as well as for numerous other dialects all through the world, sentences are isolated from one another by utilizing extraordinary marks of punctuation (full-stop, question-mark, outcry- mark) and by capitalizing the primary letter of the primary word in each sentence; and, inside sentences, words are isolated from one another by spaces. For this reason, the taught layman is recognizable with the terms ‘word’ and ‘sentence’, and employments them unreservedly in talking almost dialect.
So distant we have been employing the terms ‘word’ and ‘sentence’ without definition or explanation. We must presently look at these terms within the light of the common standards talked about within the previous chapter, taking account of the suggestions that ‘word’ and ‘sentence’ carry in ordinary utilization and in conventional syntactic hypothesis.
For reasons which is able be clarified afterward in this chapter, the classical grammarians were small concerned with the investigation of words into littler components. Be that as it may, it is obvious that, in numerous dialects at slightest, such components exist. For occasion, the English word unacceptable is made up of three littler units, each of which encompasses a characteristic distribution: un, acknowledge, and able.
