In 1918 the Boston Red Sox seemed to own the World Series. They had won it five times. That was more than any other team up to that point. The Funan River flows through Chengdu City, a cultural and economic centre in southwest China with a population of 3 million. In the 1950s the water had been so clear that fish could be seen from the bank; it was also an area where people could enjoy swimming and angling.
