The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of

the world, was first built between 220-206 B.C. In fact, it

began as independent walls for different states when it was

first built, and did not become the "Great" wall until the

Qin Dynasty. Emperor Qin Shihuang succeeded in his efforts

to have the walls joined together to serve as fortification to

protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from

invasion. Afterwards it was rebuilt and maintained over the

years, between the 5th century ВС and the 16th century.

One of the legends associated with the Great Wall of China

is that it is the only man-made structure that can be seen

from the moon with the naked eye. The legend originated

Richard Halliburton's 1938 book Second, Book of Marvels.

However, this legend is simply not true. Richard Halliburton's claim was contradicted by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Yang Liwei. A more plausible assumption would be to say that the Great Wall can be visible from a low

orbit of the earth which is not unique in this regard as many

other artificial constructions can be seen from that height.

Laughter's social role is definitely important. Today's children may be heading for a whole lot of social problems because their play and leisure time is so isolated and they lose out on lots of chances for laughter. When children stare at computer screens, rather than laughing with each other,

they get so involved that they forget to laugh at all; this is

contrary to what's natural for them. Natural social behaviour in children is playful behaviour, and in such situations laughter indicates that make-believe aggression

is just fun, not serious. This is an important way in which

children form positive emotional ties, gain new social skills

and generally start to move from childhood to adulthood.

Parents need to be very careful to ensure that their children

play in groups and laugh more.

Technology is relatively simple in many of the developing

countries. Farmers work in the fields with their hands or

with simple tools. Goods are carried to market in carts

drawn by oxen over dirt roads. Villages are often lighted

only by oil lamps and. not by electricity. In factories, hand

labor is more common than machinery. Clerks keep records

by hand in a ledger. Schools are equipped only with chairs,

desks, and a blackboard. Ships are unloaded at the docks by

dozens of men and women using their hands and not by

cranes and forklifts. The reasons for this limited state of

Since the early 1950s, private companies have been spending more and more on advertising in the mass media.

Although some advertisements provide information of public

interest, it is clear that most are aimed at sales promotion.

In some cases, rival products which are almost identical are

advertised at great expense. Many consumers complain that

such promotional advertising is wasteful and pushes up

prices. Advertising executives, however, maintain that by

advertising, they can increase sales and thus gain economies

advertising than on schools or hospitals.

There were around two and a half hours between the time

The Titanic rammed into the iceberg and its final

submersion. In this time 705 people were loaded into the

twenty lifeboats, while over 1,500 people drowned. These

figures raise an important issue. Why there were not enough

lifeboats to seat every passenger and crew member on board

The Titanic had sixteen lifeboats and four collapsible

boats which could carry just over half the number of people

on board her maiden voyage and only a third of the Titanic

total capacity. Regulations for the number of lifeboats

required were based on outdated British Board of Trade

regulations written in 1894 for ships a quarter of the

Titanic's size, and had never been revised. Under these

requirements, the Titanic was only obliged to carry enough

lifeboats to seat 962 people. At design meetings in 1910, the

shipyard's managing director, Alexander Carlisle, had

proposed that forty eight lifeboats be installed on the

Titanic, but the idea had been quickly rejected as too

expensive. Discussion then turned to the ship's décor, and a

Carlisle later described the incident ... 'we spent two hours

discussing lifeboats'.

each side of the question. In her home anyway she had

shelter and food; she had those whom she had known all her

life. However, she had to work hard, both in the house and

filled up by an advertisement.
