Making lists is relaxing. It makes you feel important - all

those things–to do. It dictates the shape of the immediate

future; it calms you down and it makes you feel good when

you cross something off. It might even help you to get things

done too. The world divides in two when it comes to listing.

Type A makes orderly lists, priorities and calmly sets to

work on them. Type В waits until panic sets in, grabs the

nearest envelope and scribbles all over it, sighs with relief

and promptly loses it. The more you have to do, the more

you need a list and few people with high-powered jobs get by

without them.

James Oliver, psychologist, has created his own time

managing matrix'. He writes a list’of things to do and then

organizes them into categories: things that have to be done

straight away, other things that it would be good to do

today, things that are important but haven't got to be done

’mmediately and things that are less urgent but that he

doesn't want to forget. ’sing categories to order the world

is the way the human mind works,' he says. After th’t, you

should put things into hierarchies of importance.' But he also

warn’ against the danger of Excessive List Syndrome.

If people get obsessed with making lists, it doesn't work, they

In the 1970s a number of researchers have explored the

development of deception in children. Some of the most

interesting experiments have involved asking youngsters not

to take a peek at their favourite toys. During these studies

child is led into a laboratory and asked to face one of the

walls. The experimenter then explains that he is going to set

up an elaborate toy a few feet behind them. After setting

up the toy, the experimenter says that he has to leave the

laboratory, and asks the child not to turn around and peek

at the toy. The child is secretly filmed by hidden cameras for

One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects

ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced

the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific

Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous

Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South

America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan.

In 1920, after some thirty-nine years of problems with

disease, high costs and politics, the Panama Canal was

officially opened. This linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

by allowing ships to pass through the fifty-mile Canal Zone

instead of travelling some seven thousand miles around Cape

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of

Reptiles have been around for millions of years and once

were the most common vertebrate animals on Earth. Today,

reptiles are divided into four main groups: turtles and

tortoises; lizards and snakes; crocodiles and alligators; and

the tuatara. A tuatara looks like a lizard, but it isn't. It's a

species’left ’ver from a group of reptiles as old as dinosaurs.

It is the closest thing to a living dinosaur. Tuataras live only

in New Zealand and are in danger of becoming extinct.

Some reptiles spend most of their time in water. But most

species live on land. All have scaly skin to protect them.

Reptiles are found in all habitats except polar ice and the

tundra.

Reptiles usually lay their eggs in nests or holes dug in the

ground. But some snakes, like rattlesnakes let the eggs

hatch inside the body and give birth to live babies. Female

crocodiles are very good mothers. They guard the nest and

even help the hatchlings get a start in life. Some snakes do

this, too. But most reptiles lay their eggs and leave. The

hatchlings, which are perfect miniature copies of their

parents, are on their own.

An ideal date for a latte drinker would probably be a night in on the sofa with a movie - and a latte! They–like comfortable surroundings and long chats with good friends.
