IRMC recently welcomed 20 new

medical students from The Florida State

University College of Medicine. It is the

eighth year IRMC has participated in the

educational program. In June 2000, The

FSU College of Medicine was created with

the mission of serving the unique needs

of Floridians. It was designed as a

community-based medical school with

regional locations in Orlando, Pensacola,

Sarasota and Tallahassee. Additional

campuses in Daytona Beach and Fort Pierce

opened in April 2007.

Medical students shadow physicians

both in and out of the hospital to learn

clinical knowledge as well as the beauty of

building relationships with the community.

Approximately half pursue primary care

specialties (Family Medicine, Internal

Medicine, and OB/GYN).

“Many of our Fort Pierce students have

family ties to Indian River County and South

Florida,”  said Juliette Lomax-Homier, MD,

IRMC and Walgreens now partner to

offer a convenient bedside delivery option

for patients upon discharge.

With a full-time Walgreens

Bedside Liaison rounding our

units, patients can have their

prescriptions filled quickly and

delivered directly to their room

prior to being discharged,

eliminating an extra stop

between hospital and home.

“We see this partnership

as a real boost in convenience

to our patients,”  said Bruce

Madara, RPh, CPh, IRMC

Pharmacy Director.  “Beyond providing

an easy, time-saving option for obtaining

prescriptions and supplies, the Walgreens

Bedside Delivery program can help improve

patients’ compliance to take medications as

prescribed by their physicians, which in turn,

can help speed recovery.”

 Patients who want the

Walgreens bedside service fill

out a request form. This form

and the prescriptions are faxed

to Walgreens by a nurse or

Walgreens Bedside Liaison.

Walgreens handles insurance

authorization, then fills and

delivers the order directly to the

patient. If a patient is ready to be

discharged, and would like to pick

up medications on the way home,

prescriptions can be faxed to a Walgreens

store. If another pharmacy is preferred by

the patient, the next refill can be transferred

back to the patient’s pharmacy of choice.

Construction to restore our three

concrete stair-towers begins on Monday,

July 20. The restoration will begin outside

the 5th floor east tower and move down

as each landing is completed. Work will

proceed to the north and south towers.

Completion of the project is expected in

early October.

Engineering will provide a weekly

schedule to nursing leadership identifying

areas that could be impacted by noise or

vibration, said Bob Michael, CHFM,

Director of Facilities.

Life and Disability Insurance Changes to Cigna

Human Resources announced that we

have changed our life and disability carrier

from Reliance Standard to Cigna effective

July 1, 2015.  This change is seamless for our

participants. Participants have the same

benefits and deductions. All that has

changed is the carrier.

review/update your beneficiary designation

form, please contact your HR team at ext. 1125.

Richard Roozen, Director, Food

and Nutrition Services, was honored

as a finalist for the Premier award for

Illuminating Excellence in Washington,

D.C. IRMC ranked in the top 10 of

1,600 hospitals.

The award was based on patient

satisfaction scores, cost controls and

positive press. IRMC has had patient

satisfaction scores in the upper

90th percentile for its food services

for the past eight years, fueled by full

hotel-style room service and comfort

foods with a gourmet touch. Costs are

kept reasonable by changing up products

to outperform inflation, flexible staffing, a

profitable retail program and more. Both

the food critic at TCPalm and an article in

Vero Beach Magazine praised IRMC’s food,

calling it  “outstanding”  and  “meals worthy

of a gourmet restaurant.”

Curtis Carpenter, RT, (R)(CT), has

performed CPR on patients as part of his job

in the hospital. But he never expected to be

part of a chain of events that would have him

performing CPR on a man in a canal recently

and helping to save a life.

Dick Gower of Indian River Estates

was taking his daily walk when he lost his

balance and stumbled over the edge of an

embankment. Carpenter, who found himself

in the right place at the right time, was able to

perform CPR on Gower at the scene, reviving

the unresponsive man before an Indian River

Fire Rescue emergency medical crew arrived

to transport him to the hospital.

“I’ve been certified in CPR for 10 years

and I had performed it before in the hospital,

but never in a situation like this, ” Curtis said

in an interview with local media.  “So to be

able to bring someone back…It was the most

unbelievable thing that’s ever happened to

me.”

Curtis was honored by his fellow

employees in Imaging Sciences in late June

with a luncheon that included a cake in the

shape of a Lifesaver, said Amanda Parker

Manager, Diagnostic Imaging. Curtis received

a plaque thanking him for  “his brave, selfless

and courageous act in saving a life.”
