Many critics o f globalization say that it is a major cause o f poverty, 
that it opens up developing countries to exploitation by big foreign 
corporations, and that it results in people in wealthy countries losing jo bs 
when cheaper foreign imports put their companies out o f business.
They also criticize foreigners for “ buying up” local companies and creating 
a homogenized world run by multinational corporations not accountable to 
any government. Globalization for all its faults, helps economies grow- 
which means improving standards o f living for billions o f people around 
the world. The United Nations Human Developm ent Index, an indicator o f
literacy and standard o f living in countries around the world, shows that 
during the last years o f the twentieth century, more than a billion people 
around the world escaped absolute poverty through economic growth. 
Those countries that embraced globalization have enjoyed rates o f growth 
that were, on average, 50 percent higher than those with closed borders. 
Globalization, we must note, does benefit some people more than others. 
Access to technology and capital has created new j o b s for workers in 
developing countries, and those countries and com panies with technology 
and capital to sell have also benefited enormously from globalization.
