Branches of science
Bobur: Today we had first science class. It was fun. Our science teacher is very nice. She is a good scientist.
Shoira: I like science too! my favourite science is biology. I love to study living things; plants and animals. I am going to be a biologist.
Sarvar: I like studying physics. It is very interesting to study how things happen. I’m going to be a physicist.
Mother: What about chemistry? Doesn’t anyone like chemistry? You know, I teach chemistry. It is very interesting to study what things are made of.
Shoira: I like chemistry. But I don’t want to be a chemist. I am afraid of the experiments. I feel that something is going to blow-up.
Father: experiments are very useful. You can learn many things by experimenting. If you are very careful and follow the rules, nothing will blow-up.
Bobur: Our teacher told us that, the three methods of science are observation, experiment and measurement. And she spoke about the four branches of science.
Father: Yes, the four main branches of science are biology, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Mathematics is the study of numerals and their relation. Without it, how would you be able to make measurements?
Mother: And the scientist who works in mathematics is a mathematician.
Bobur: Aren’t there other sciences?
Father: Yes, there are many sciences. But each is a branch of these four. They all use the rules of the four main sciences.
Bobur: for example engineering is also a science. You are a science too. aren’t you father?
Father: Yes, in a way. Engineering is a science. But, it is also a technology. Scientists find the rules of science. Technology uses it to make things. For example, scientists found rules for using steam power. Engineers made the steam engine and the train. Science and technology work together.

  1. Measure 50 ml sand, with one of the graduated-cylinders.

  2. Measure 50 ml water with the other graduated-cylinder.

  3. Pour water over sand.

  4. What is the final volume? Why is it not 50+50 =100 ml?
