CHAPTER 2. PASSIVE VOICE/ IT’S SAID THAT…/ HAVE SOMETHING DONE…
UNIT 5 PASSIVE VOICE.

  • Passive voice is especially used when the result of an action is more important than the doer of the action and when the attention is focused on the done action more than who did it:

Coca Cola was invented in 1886 in Atlanta. This room is cleaned every four hours.

  • Sentences can be changed from active into passive only if there is a verb and an object:

I use this computer 4 hours every day. This computer is used 4 hours every day.

  • In passive voice the doer of the action is unknown or not so important. If it’s necessary to give the doer it can be added at the and with “by”:

This computer is used 4 hours every day by me.

  • When the active is changed into passive, the object of the active becomes the subject of the passive. In passive voice we add “to be” according to the tense and we use the verb in past participle(V3) form:

I clean the room. The room is cleaned.
He broke the car. The car was broken.

  • Sometimes it’s possible to use “get” instead of “to be” in passive constructions:

I got hurt in the accident. = I was hurt in the accident.
Did Ann get offered the job? = Was Ann offered the job?

“get” is used to say that something happens to someone or something. Often the action is not planned; it happens by chance. In other types of situations “get” is not usually possible:

The dog got run over by a car. = The dog was run over by a car.

Passive constructions.

  1. to do – to be done

  2. doing – being done

  3. do – be done

  4. going to do – going to be done

  5. S+M.V.+do – S+M.V.+be+ done
