What is crime?

An action or omission:

• which constitutes an offence
• and is punishable by law
• defined by criminal law
• If one engages in such behavior, they may be guilty of a crime and prosecuted in criminal court

Major categories

• personal crimes
• property crimes
• inchoate crimes
• Statutory Crimes

Personal Crimes

• Assault
• Battery
• False Imprisonment
• Kidnapping
• Homicide
• Rape, statutory rape, sexual assault and other offenses of a sexual nature

Property Crimes

• Larceny (theft)
• Robbery (theft by force)
• Burglary (penalties for burglary)

• Attempt – any crime that is attempted like “attempted robbery”
