Forecasting the weather

Learning objectives:
  • to be able to utilise the factors that make up the weather to create a successful weather forecast
  • to research the reasons why the weather is like it is, in certain locations, at certain times of year.

Create your own weather forecast

Create your own weather forecast for anywhere in the world.



Success criteria:
  • Must be geographically accurate (correct weather types for the time of year etc.).
  • Uses key terminology (meteorologist, weather, climate) in the correct context.
  • Must include at least three aspects of the weather (e.g. temperature, wind speed, wind direction).
  • Explain why the weather is like it is.

Instructions:

Use PowerPoint and take advantage of the animations (these might be useful for wind direction moving across the country)

Select a useful map from Google

  • Is it clear (avoid clutter)?
  • Has it got place names?

Find some symbols that are used regularly on forecasts (clouds, suns etc.)

Follow the format of weather forecasts – are your temperature numbers within circles?



Write a script! Don’t just try and wing it! You need to be using the correct terminology, e.g. ‘We are your meteorologists for today’s forecasting the weather’.
